The history of the Canal du Midi spans more than 350 years, including projects that were put forward long before Riquet's, constant evolution, farming and commercial activities that developed thanks to this link between the two seas... UNESCO granted world heritage status to the canal to ensure it is safeguarded and passed on to future generations.
