CARCASSONNE
Ludvig Holberg, a Danish dramatist, was highly appreciated by the Norwegians. For the bicentennial of his birth, Edvard Grieg, also born in Bergen, pays tribute to him by composing this Suite Op. 40, to which he gives his name: he writes it in a style contemporary to that of the writer, combining Norwegian folklore with that of Johann Sebastian Bach. “I am not destined to solve the problems of the world, I only want to show men how beautiful nature and life are,” thus expressed Edvard Grieg. The second “hit” of the chamber music of this evening is the Serenade for Strings by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, almost Mozartian music. Its performance is preceded by the Prelude and Scherzo for String Octet by Dmitri Shostakovich, a youthful work in which the composer hesitates between tradition and innovation…
The Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse and the Théâtre de Carcassonne continue their fruitful collaboration this season by inviting the string orchestra. Under the musical direction of Yannick Callier, it is an ensemble that usually performs without a conductor, thus allowing great complicity between the instrumentalists… Supervised by a professor for the preparation of the program, the students thus expand the practice of chamber music, from the smallest formation to the string orchestra, opening up to a vast repertoire.
