The origins of kamishibai go back to the 12th century. The monks travelled the country to convert the Japanese to Buddhism. They used illustrations, painted on canvas rolls or on cardboard boards slipped into a wooden frame that they carried on their back
Kamishibai or “picture theater” literally means “paper theater game”. This technique of storytelling of Japanese origin is based on sequential images (cardboard boards, originally made of paper) scrolling in a small wooden or cardboard theater. It is similar to the Guignol theater, but with images instead of puppets.
