Marcellina dreams of marrying Fidelio, her jailer father’s new assistant. In the fortress is Florestan, whom Governor Don Pizarro wants to kill. He orders Marcellina’s father Rocco to dig a grave for the prisoner. But Fidelio, who has close ties with Florestan, is determined to prevent his murder.
