In post-World War II West Germany, teenage Michael Berg meets 35-year-old Hanna. A passionate, secret relationship develops between them, making Michael Hanna’s lover. The young man goes to her house every day and indulges in the ritual of reading her stories. Despite their intimacy, Hanna remains mysterious and disappears overnight, breaking Michael’s heart.
