CARCASSONNE
Count De Luna is in love with Leonora, lady-in-waiting to the Princess of Aragon. He wants to get rid of his rival, a mysterious troubadour (that is, a wandering singer) who sings serenades under Leonora’s windows, whose heart he has won. The count does not know that the one who arouses his jealousy, Manrico, is actually his own brother, long ago kidnapped by a gypsy and whom everyone believes to be dead. Azucena, the daughter of this gypsy burned for witchcraft, has taken in and raised Manrico as her son. Only she knows the family tie that unites the two men. Always driven by the desire to avenge her mother, unjustly condemned by the father of the two brothers, she will reveal the truth only at the crucial moment when Count De Luna leads Manrico to his execution. Azucena triumphs: she has avenged her mother by letting the count murder his brother.
