CARCASSONNE
The first French quartet to win the International Wigmore Competition in London, the Van Kuijk Quartet has had an international presence on the biggest stages since 2014: they have also received 5 diapasons for their first volume of the complete Mendelssohn quartets. In an original approach, a CD titled “Impressions Parisiennes” was created with composer and pianist Baptiste Trotignon, who writes about it:
“Ten years after my first Quartet, the proposal from the Van Kuijk Quartet to immerse myself again in this universe immediately seduced me with its originality and relevance: to write 5 pieces freely inspired by these emblematic composers who are Poulenc, Fauré, Ravel, Satie, and Debussy, while keeping in mind this idiom of French melody that has united them and that they have particularly nourished (…) it is indeed a loving evocation in which I have taken all the necessary liberties for the pleasure of writing, satisfied some desires, fantasized about some rhythmic agitations… all these desires were more than fulfilled from the first readings of the Van Kuijk Quartet, with lyricism, precision, joy, and sonic beauty. The five chained pieces are conceived as an arc (fast-slow-fast-slow-fast), but can also be played separately, as miniatures” Baptiste Trotignon
Tonight’s concert has adopted the second formula.
