The composer’s first major religious work is a work of rare emotional intensity. It was shortly after the death of his daughter that he set to music this Stabat Mater, a prayer to the mother of Christ at the foot of the Cross.
This work, a sublime lament that washes over you in successive waves, was a huge success from the outset.
